I've been trying to teach the kids about the fruits of the Spirit the last couple of days. It's tricky because they don't understand all the words, and while they know what fruit is, they don't know how it goes with "spirit", whatever THAT is! So tonight the kids were all trying to share while licking the bowl of cookie dough. They were doing pretty well, and as I could see Hannah was starting to get a bit greedy, I gently said, without really thinking about it; "Gentleness...love, joy and peace, children." Then Hannah said "I am enjoying it!"
Spiders are gross, and they freak us girls out. Some of us handle them better than others, but for the most part, girls hate spiders. I know they won't actually hurt us, I know I am a zillion times bigger than they are, but THEY ARE CREEPY, gross, and I'm pretty sure I heard one hiss at me. Even if you, as a man, don't think spiders are creepy and worth your attention, show your wife how big and strong you are and get up and kill the spider! Do not ask for anything in return, just let your wife (or sister or daughter or whatever female you happen to be around) rest in the comfort of knowing you are her protector and you will always, without question, take care of all the creepy critters that dare invade her home. You will be rewarded with a happy wife who will think you are mighty and brave!
Ok, I fought it for a long time. I was NOT going to play! I had nothing against it, music is just not my thing. But, my sweet daughter really wanted me to try it, and since I'm trying not to be a boring mom, I said okay. I did one song on the drums, and Hadassah said "wow mom, you're not very good." I agreed and went back to being boring. THEN... I found out you "win" money and can go "shopping"! Where has this game been all my life?! I did a few songs and before I knew it I had over $1000! I got to buy a dress, shoes and a leggings, any color I wanted! A few more songs and I got a snake-skin drum set! More shoes and a new skirt! It's like playing dolls with more dress up clothes than I ever imagined. I even got to design my own "doll". Her name is Luanne Holden. She's not very good at the drums, but she tries hard. So now I get to be a cool mom who plays dress up with two of my daughters (my 3yr old has very definite opinions on what Luanne should wear), bang on pretend drums and shop till I drop. woohoo!
I sometimes feel like I have two options: one, clean the house, or two, do the laundry. It's such a drag to reach into the dryer to empty it (epecially as I grow in pregnancy!), and I always drop clothes...clean clothes on a dirty floor because obviously, I'm doing laundry, not cleaning. Then I have to reach in the washer and pull out all those sopping...sometimes smelling...clothes and put them in the dryer. Then, whew, I'm done. But, oh, wait, look at the full basket of dirty clothes. In goes another load, and I feel like I've accomplished nothing! I still have a full washer and dryer, only now, the couch is full of clothes waiting to be folded and put away. Sometimes they get folded, and they sit there until the kids knock the piles down and have to be folded all over again. I could put them away I suppose, but I really don't ever want to, so I put it off. If I didn't have wonderful sisters-in-law who come and not only do my laundry, but put it away, at least once a week, I would really be sunk. I can hardly handle it even with their help, where would I be without it!!?
Now, you might think a couple of weeks or maybe even a month. After all, eggs are pretty sturdy, right? Well, I don't know how long ostrich eggs last, but I do know they aren't meant to last 5 or 6 years. Last night we were all hanging out at the big Hawkins house. Hannah, my 2 1/2 year old was out on the porch. I knew she was there, but I was busy talking and not really paying attention. I heard this banging sound, but it hadn't really entered the conscious part of my brain yet. All of a sudden there was an explosion, like the loudest balloon pop you ever heard. We all hurried to the door and there was poor little Hannah. She had a hammer in her hands and was saying over and over "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" There on the porch was a crate of ostrich eggs. 5 year old eggs, a 2 year old and a hammer just don't go together. The egg exploded everywhere. The smell? Pretty much what you would expect. Susanna grabbed Hannah so we could shut the door to keep the smell out. It was awful, just plain awful. Susanna had taken Hannah to the tub to clean her up. I could hear her sobbing from the living room, so I went in to her. The poor thing was so upset. She was standing there in the tub with egg...stuff on her head, water dripping, and inconsolable. She was unhurt, just scared. I imagine she won't be banging on strange objects any time soon! So, what is the moral of this story? Don't keep ostrich eggs? Don't give a two year old a hammer? You decide. I have to make breakfast now. Eggs, anyone?
Is there anything better than sitting in a swing outside watching children play in the Summer evening? I think not. I'm sitting here browsing on the computer watching the kids pull each other around in their wagon. They're playing pretend and of course the wagon is their car. Hadassah can pull Ethan and Hannah probably as fast as I could! Pretty soon Hadassah and I are going to play a game in where I throw water at her and she tries to catch it in a bucket. She gets absolutely soaked, but thinks it's so fun to catch the water. I think it's so fun to throw water at her. It's pretty much a win-win game. I love Summer!
I have a living room, kitchen, bedroom, kids rom, bathroom and back room. I can have one or two of these rooms clean at one time, but why not all? I'll tell you why. Because while I am in the kids room cleaning, they are in the living room trashing! And the minute I clean the kitchen, it's time to eat again, and therefore mess it back up. On an up note, today I asked them to clean up real quick before we went to the bank, and they did! Yesterday it took a half an hour to clean up just the doll stuff...but today they cleaned. So yes, there is hope.
We woke up this morning to 3 whole inches of snow! The kids and I bundled up in layers and out we went. Hadassah made trails all over the yard with her broom. Ethan and Hannah and I followed the trails. Then they started eating the snow. You'd think I never fed these kids with the amound of snow they eat. Next we were off to the front yard to make snow angels. Hadassah laid down and make hers. When she got up she said "A flower angel!" I'm not sure why.... Then Ethan made one and Hadassah looked at it and said "Oh, a camoflage one." She must be seeing something I'm not.
Paul had the day off of work today because of the roads. The problem? Beth gets nothing done when Paul is home! But, it wasn't too bad. He was sweet and went and got potatoes for me so I can make soup tomorrow. He also got me a hot chocolate, a cookie from Starbucks, a bag of cookies from Trader Joe's, an organic chocolate bar, and himself two boxes of tea. I think he loves me!
