Now, you might think a couple of weeks or maybe even a month. After all, eggs are pretty sturdy, right? Well, I don't know how long ostrich eggs last, but I do know they aren't meant to last 5 or 6 years.
Last night we were all hanging out at the big Hawkins house. Hannah, my 2 1/2 year old was out on the porch. I knew she was there, but I was busy talking and not really paying attention. I heard this banging sound, but it hadn't really entered the conscious part of my brain yet.
All of a sudden there was an explosion, like the loudest balloon pop you ever heard. We all hurried to the door and there was poor little Hannah. She had a hammer in her hands and was saying over and over "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" There on the porch was a crate of ostrich eggs. 5 year old eggs, a 2 year old and a hammer just don't go together.
The egg exploded everywhere. The smell? Pretty much what you would expect. Susanna grabbed Hannah so we could shut the door to keep the smell out. It was awful, just plain awful.
Susanna had taken Hannah to the tub to clean her up. I could hear her sobbing from the living room, so I went in to her. The poor thing was so upset. She was standing there in the tub with egg...stuff on her head, water dripping, and inconsolable. She was unhurt, just scared. I imagine she won't be banging on strange objects any time soon!
So, what is the moral of this story? Don't keep ostrich eggs? Don't give a two year old a hammer? You decide. I have to make breakfast now. Eggs, anyone?
